new bike and a 24hr solo!!!!!

Well a lot has happened in the last month, where do i start.... came 1st in the local club round which took me to 2nd overall for the yr. After that was the scott 24hr in canberra which i did as a team of 4 mixed with james charli and brodie from wagga, we were riding for radical lights and looked pretty cool with matchin shirts. We went really well taking out 3rd place, even after a few flat batteries n punctures, the pace between us boys was pretty flat out seein as we had 3hrs rest between laps. Cheers to hiran for providing the lights, they r super bright!!
The wkend after the scott was just any easy one not much riding, but the wkend after that i decided to ride my single speed from bulli to ulladulla which is 155km n took me 5hrs 25 min, lots of big hills in this trip i was absolutely buggered by the time i got there, still managed to go out for a beer tho :)

The next wkend me james n simon rode our single speeds to belmont via ourimbah to watch the start of the 6 hr race n back. The look on everyones face when we turned up at the local xc track on roadies was pricless lol, a few even asked if we were racin on them! So i ended up doin about 155km again in 5hrs 45min not a bad effort backin up from the wk b4.
Off to the highland fling this wkend, i knew it would be tough cuz i rode half the track in the 3 ring circus a few months back, lots of climbing and it was lengthened to about 115km. After gettin lost with the lead pack, i had to try make my way thru all the traffic after we got back on track. James somehow managed to get away early so i was on the hunt. I rode for about 3 hrs i reckon, flat out n in the big dog punishing myself trying to catch him, even rode the wall in the middle ring again!! i finaaly caughtcrawford who said james wasnt too far ahead but my legs had totally blow out.
I struggled to ride the last 30 odd km n felt like crap but kept pedallin n managed to come in at 4th place. So good effort considering i went out too hard.

Back on the single spped this wkend and its all the way to newcastle and back. Me n james left early so by the time we got there we had an all day breakfast at monkey monkey monkey. Awesome food and plenty of talent up there. Im sure there will be plenty more trips there for lunch!! We done almost 180km in 6hrs 22min, its a pretty flat ride but still its a long way n we only have one gear lol.

The fat tyre festival 8hr race at ourimbah is our first official team turner race. We finally got our bikes on the thursday b4 and all our jerseys too. Me james brad n brock destroyed the competition by 2 laps and 10 min!!!! The race was called off at 6 hrs cuz it was 45 degrees and gettin too dangerous for the solos, ridin thru the graveyard felt like a sauna, it was rediculous!!! So im pretty sure we done stu proud with our efforts we looked awesome in the team kit too. The bike is sweet, pedals so good but soaks up the bumps great too, pretty stoked, its looks sick with all the carbon bits everwhere!

So this is the big one......Kona 24hr SOLO!!!
Me n james head off in the hire car on thursday morning on the way to forrest in melbourne. We get to his siters after about 9 n a half hours drive n crash there the night. Friday we head to the track n set up camp, just enough time for a practise lap n we find the biggest bermed corners ever!!! So much fun cant wait to ride this all day! Fri nite in the tent was hell. It absolutely pissed down n was really windy so not much sleep for either of us. Sat morning n its preperation time. We visit the Torq tent to load up with bars gels n sports drink. Thanks heaps to Dean n Jen for supply us n keepin us goin the whole time. Normally race food for more than 5-6 hrs makes u feel sick but we ate a bar n a gel and drank a bottle of drink every lap the whole race and had no problems at all!! Awesome stuff!

So we start the race n the first few laps r good, its a bit wet but the track is ok. After a while tho, n some more rain, it turns to an absolute mud fest!!! Trying to ride on ice for 24hrs wasnt much fun but we still managed to keep goin. Me n james rode a few laps together every now n then which was great, its always to have someone to talk to. We didnt really get tired till about 2 in the morning when we had a decent rest of about 15min.
Slogging on thru the night, which was a different lap than the day lap, i got to about 6am when the sun came up n i just hit the wall. I had to stop and just tried to eat what i could. Iwas nodding off on my chair and must have been there for 25 min. I really thought i couldnt do anymore and struggled to get back on the bike. This is when a pit crew would have been handy to get me goin again.
I got my energy back but was still strugglin cuz my knee had started to hurt and the more i stopped the worse it was, so i just kept goin. After a few laps i asked the guys next to us what the time was. 9.30. Damn it said still got 2-3 laps left. A voice from behind me says, come ill lets do a few slow laps together, thinkin it was james i was surprised when i turned around and it was jason english!!! Awesome im gonna keep ridin now! So off we go havin a good old chat which helped me take my mind off the pain. I think my last lap was just a blur, i was in such a world of hurt n couldnt concentrate on anything. My whole body was aching and i just wanted to finish this lap then die. I wasnt givin up tho we had travelled so far spent so much money and been training for months for this. I gritted my teeth and pushed on, every log rollover felt like a 10 foot drop. I came in with half an hour left so i could have done another lap but i was destroyed. I walked to the tent and sat down, trying to hold back the tears, couldnt believe what i had achieved on my first solo with no support crew and pushin thru so much pain and tiredness. Must have been 45min b4 james came in n we were both just speechless. So happy with our efforts, very emotional finish for both of us. After the presentation we went to the computer to check where wed come. James is lookin at the screen then turns around with a smile" dude u came 11th" i couldnt believe it.......... i dint even know if i would be able to ride the whole race but to come 11th was just unbelievable, james came in at 19th which was awesome considering he spent an hour changin brakes over and when i saw him early mornin i thought he would finish up in hospital he looked so bad!!!
Back to james' sisters for a well earned sleep then on monday the 10hr drive home again! We made it alright not gettin to tired, once again cant believe what we both achieved, was way beyond our expectations.
Just recovering this week, been on crutches cuz my knee swelled up so much i couldnt walk. Almost better tho next wk ill get back on the bike. Funnily enough im keen as for another race but for now a few beers will do me..............

Sponsorship!!!!

After being offered a grass roots sponsorship from a bike shop in ulladulla i thought i would mention the offer to my local bike shop up here. They said they could match it and i thought this would be easier being close to home. At the same time my mates girlfriend charli had mentioned this to her boss who is a bike parts whole saler on the central coast. He asked to see some results and said he would c what he could do. Wow from nothing to 3 offers in 1 week! I get a phone call at work and he is very impresed with my results seeing as i have only been riding seriously for less than a year. We talked about the conditions and it all sounded awesome. The big turning point was that he wanted to start a team. So after a long meeting and sorting out all the fine details i signed the contract!!
Im now sponsored by SCV imports in tuggerah who deal with Light & Motion, Turner bikes, FSA, IXS protective gear and marzocchi suspension. Big thanks to Stu and the team for giving me a chance and the opportunity of a lifetime.
If all this wasnt the best news ever the next week i hear news that TORQ nutrition and Continental tyres have jumped in to sponsor the team as well!! Awesome news as TORQ has a testing facility and access to a coach and nutritionalist.
Cant wait to get my new bike with all the best gear on it and start rippin it up and gettin some good results and doin the team and Stu proud. Im all in now, theres no lookin back and the possibilities are endless. National title, Worlds champs, Olympics....... who knows :)

Awaba 4hr Race

It was a nice change to be racing on a saturday for once so that i didnt have to work the day after a race! The race started with a qualifying lap of a shorter 2km course to sort out the start positions. A couple of people got in under the 5 min mark, including former world 24hr solo champion Craig Gordon!, with me coming in at 5:02.
I started not too far from the front withe first lap or two spent overtakin a few slower people. Track length was about 7-8km and had some nice bermed corners with plenty of drift happening! At about lap 3 i realise daniel, who id raced against at sparrow hill, was behind me. This kid only just turned 16 and is a solid rider for his age. So he follows me around for quite a few laps, so close to me it felt like i had a trailer on lol. We were setting a cracking pace which had me a bit worried but i was havin too much fun to slow down.
He finally takes the lead for a while at lap 9 or so after we stop at transition to refuel. He is still riding fairly quick n im wondering if im gonna be able to get back past him, i notice that he isnt eatin that much tho. Its a hard track to eat on but i had managed to get a few gels down on the limited amount of firetrail. Halfway thru this lap on a little pinch climb, i hear what sounds like a truck comin up behind me. I turn around just in time to hear gordo yell track as he laps us n let him thru. He passes daniel on the top of the hill which we were riding out of the saddle in middle ring, n i notice that gordo is in the dog (the biggest ring) with only about 3 gears left on the back!! Man this guy has some legs!! Also he says thanks, not even puffing or panting n looks like hes only done 1 lap!
Anyway with gordo gone in a flash its back to me n dan with another guy closing in for 4th place. Thru the transition again and fourth goes first then dan then me. The commentator is goin off by this time with us guys swapping the lead and being so close. Dan manages to get back into 2nd n gets a little gap on me. I struggle to get back into 3rd but manage, then catch up with dan again. Getting tired by this stage i pass dan near the end of the 2nd last lap n scoff some more food. Luckily i get an energy boost and decide to put the hammer down for the last lap.
I hold it flat, still having a ball on this awesome track, n keep looking back. No dan in sight. I knew i would just beat him as he hadnt eaten enough. I come past the finish with 30 sec left. If dan turned up before 4 hrs we would have to go out for another lap so im waiting, still clipped in with the mc firing the crowd up so much, he counts down n still no dan. I breath a sigh of relief, 2nd place was mine :) after a quick interview i see dan finally coming round the last corner. The laps were about 22 min and id put 5 mins on him in the last lap alone! This is what happens when u dont eat enough, its not fun hitting the wall like that......been there done that............

Angry doctor 100km Mogo

With expected temperatues of 30 degrees i wasnt lookin forward to slogging it out around mogo. We drive down on sat arvo for the rego and hang around catchin up with ppl for a while, its already hot enough on sat n sun is gonna be worse!
So up at 5 meet my uncle at the turn off n we r on our way. Still half asleep n not havin much time to get ready i ride to the start line where we r told there is different start groups depending on how fast u think you will do it. I decide against group 1 which is under 5:45 n go in group 2, 6 mins later. This turns out to be a good idea as me n two single speed guys break away from the pack n get the trail to ourselves for a while with no trafic.
After about 10km we catch up with the tail end of group 1, seems they over estimated themselves a bit lol. I ended up riding by myself for a while at this stage and must have passed about 30-40ppl from group one. I finally caught up to one of the single speeders at about 40km n we rode together for a while havin a chat.

I felt good comin throught the 50km mark n stopped for some fluid refills, only takin about 30 seconds, thanks chops, n i was off again. All was good untill about the 62km mark when the mother of all climbs hit me!!! It must have been at least 8km long n was just painfull, 35 degrees out on the track i found out later on, and so dusty too. I rode this hill with one other guy, both of us grinding away askin each other why the hell we were doin this??? me too stubborn to put it in granny ring so just pushin away in the middle.
Finally we reach the top n with a nice breeze its into about 5km of awesome downhill single track, bermed corners and all! Definately worth the climb (just lol) Not too many long climbs for the rest of the second 50 luckily but im still exhausted, about 5km left to go and id caught a lot of ppl that were struggling. Takin a gamble that there was no climbs left i put it in the big dog, head down, painful look on my face and start to reel in all these tired ppl. After about the 5th person im running on adrenalin only but still makin up places. I sprint the last 5oom and get 3 more places to give me 16th in open male and 36th overall. Unable to even get my helmet off or talk, chops pours water over me as im slumped over my bars, rediculously buggered but cheer up a bit when i find out i did it in 5hr21min! awesome time!!! Alot of ppl werent ready for the heat, me included, it was good to c how many actually finished the race n still had a smile on their face.
Was a great track, very challenging but very rewarding ill definately be back next yr, look out group 1!!!

single speed, world champs and emergency room

After a longer than expected wait, organising parts, my single speed road bike was finally ready to go this wk! The same afternoon i picked it up i rode straight from my house to kariong hill to test it out. The 15 kms from my house was a good warm up, even tho i was a bit wobbly not having ridden a roadie for yrs, and the first half of the hill was goin good. Up towards the lookout tho was a different story, i only just had enough power in my legs to push up the last bit!!!
So it looks like the boys at bikeworx got the gearing pretty spot on for me, i wanted to be only just able to make it up kariong cause hopefully im only gonna get stronger.

The second ride i had planned on the ss was a bit longer, hopin to do about 2 hours. I set out from mine again and went through springfield and on to henry parry drive. I knew i would have to hit this climb with a run up, but unlucky i got the red light at the bottom of the hill arghhhh!!
From basically a standing start i tried my best to build up speed but didnt get very far, it got real steep real quick! Determined not to give up i was calling my legs all sorts of names to make it to the top, only just made it n needed a rest for a minute to recover. The rest of the ride was pretty good, no big climbs just nice up n down through to tuggerah then the entrance then back home. 50km all up and 1 hour 50min not bad for my second time.

Saturday was our trip down to the world championships in canberra. 4.30 am we left (stupid idea, i hate mornings!!) and got ther about 9. The female elite r up first so we watch the start then head up the hill to the hammerhead to watch ppl stack. Unfortuanately the women all rode it pretty damn good with only a minor bingle. A quick lunch then its time for the mens turn. We decide to watch this start from up the fire road a bit. The sound of 80 riders coming round the corners was awesome!!! They were so fast and about 6-8 wide it was like a frieght train. Up the top we go again for some action. This time we see a massive stack on the rock drop as someonegoes over the bars and bounces their way down (ouch!!) We check out some more sections and i get some awesome photos. Back to the finish line just in time to witness first and second sprint it out after 2 hours and seven laps, the sound from the crowd was amazing, it was like there was 50 000 ppl there!!
Back in the car for the drive home, get there about 10 pm so tired but thanks to brian for driving us and feeding us too, cheers mate.

Ourimbah race today, reverse loop, (doh) and im hoping some fast riders from other clubs turn up so its not just a race between me n chops. Adam Kelly n his mate turn up, sweet game on i say to myself!! While im talking to a mate chops does a warm up lap and somehow manages to come off and dislocate his shoulder!!!! Damn now i have to chase these 2 on my own! So chops gets driven to emergency n its time to race.
Fireroad start and im right behind adam and his mate, spending the first lap trying to figure out where to go in reverse, i mansge to stay on their tail. 2nd lap n not much has changed, the 3 of us r so close u could have thrown a blanket over us! The other 2 swap the lead a few times with me staying in 3rd hammering my legs. Last lap n we r all so close still, im quite happy with this cause adam usually beats me by a fair bit. With adam in the lead on the last climb his mate makes a move n slips by just before the top. I have absolutely nothing left but still manage to cross the line a couple of metres behind him so 3rd for me, such a flat out race but really happy with how i went. Off to the hospital to c if chops is alright, things arent 2 bad but we have angry doctor next wkend! Hope you have a quick recovery and are able to ride cause it just wouldnt be the same without ya there mate......

working week series 8hr at sparrow hill

Back on the road again with a late depature (yay sleep in!) n Sparrow Hill near Queanbeyan is our destination. Originally the plan was to camp there on the sat nite but with 3 bikes and all our gear there wasnt much room left in the car! So me Chops n Charlie decide to stay at a motel which was a good decision as Canberra had some scary lookin clouds over it! We arrive at the track about 4.30 n manage to get a lap in before the rain n get rego out of the way. Lots of new bits in the track which i hadn done in the Mont so good to find out this before i raced on it.

We wake on sunday to a freezing cold wind that didnt let up all day! only good thing about it was that it dried the track out a bit. Gear all set up with the gazebo in a good position for the transition n chops is up for the start lap. Seems the New Zealand n Chile world teams had turned up for a bit of practice so things were confusing at the start making it look like we were way behind. My turn comes n i hit the single track flat out passing as many people as i can. The legs are feelin good n the track is slowly wearing in. I do about a 32 min lap and sit down to try scoff some food before the next lap.

About half way into the race i find out the worlds teams had finished and gone home (they werent doin the whole race) and that we were in 3rd place by 2 min! Awesome, so i tell chops n he sighs cause he knows we have to work hard now! He does a double lap so he can go get his phone he left at the motel (silly bugger) n then its my turn to do a double. The first lap felt slow n i thought i was tiring so i had some food while riding n into the second lap. Im feelin better now so i put the hammer down n carve up the downhill sections. I find out that my 2 laps were 1 second apart! Talk about consistant! Chops comes in from his laps and informs me that second had a flat n we were now second! Time to punish myself again as this was my last lap, so i give it everything n come in before the 8 hrs, 1st is way ahead of us n 3rd is about 8 min behind us.
Out chops goes to do the extra lap and holds on to 2nd place for us! Stoked with our efforts and had a really fun race too, finally all this training is paying off for me! We collect our prizes, get a quick photo and straight into the car with the heater on for the drive home. Great results fun wkend n met some great people too'.......
